FAQs
-
Welcome! We are open every day and have a variety of classes which offer different styles of yoga and options for all levels. Have a read of our class styles for more information on what each class entails and see below for some recommendations. Feel free to get in touch with our team for some advice if you are unsure.
You can book classes and workshops through the timetable on our website, via the Mindbody app, or by email/phone. If you have any difficulties booking online, please get in touch.
We ask that you arrive 15 minutes early for your first class so that we have time to show you around and you can fill out a quick health form. Please make sure you inform us of any injuries, physical and mental issues, or medication you are on when you first visit us and keep us up to date if anything changes. You don’t need to bring anything specific with you apart from a water bottle, and a towel if you are coming to hot yoga. We generally advise that you don’t eat 2 hours prior to class; unless you have been so busy that you haven’t time to eat all day, in which case we would rather you have a light snack like a banana or power ball before you practice.
If you are pregnant, please read our pregnancy questions below and note that not all of our classes are suitable for you to attend.
Before your visit, please read the information here on how to find us and our parking options.

Our Welcome Offer is available to all new customers and gives you two weeks of unlimited yoga (including hot and online classes) for £35. You can select the Welcome Offer at the checkout when purchasing your first class, and the two weeks will begin from the date of your first class rather than the date of purchase. If you have previously attended a workshop or outdoor class with us you are still eligible for the offer but won’t be able to purchase it online, so just drop us a message to arrange it.
-
You are welcome to use one of our yoga mats or bring your own along. We have plenty of props (bricks, blocks, straps, bolsters etc) in the studio which will be laid out for you before the class; feel free to help yourself to any additional props from the side of the room. If you would prefer to use your own, you’re welcome to bring them.
When attending a hot or warm class please bring a towel to lay over your mat - this will help stop you slipping once you start to sweat. You can use a yoga mat towel or a regular bath towel. Many people like to bring a second towel to wipe themself down with during/after class.
We always suggest taking water into class with you. We are happy to fill up your bottle from the tap or provide you with a glass, and have hot and cold drinks available for sale.
We also have mats, props, and grip mat towels available to purchase from our shop.
-
Wear something comfortable which allows you to move freely; for yoga and hot yoga most people wear leggings/shorts and a vest/t-shirt. Yoga is practiced in bare feet. It’s a good idea to bring a jumper in cooler weather for the start and end of class. If you’re attending a slow class such as yin, restorative or sound healing, feel free to dress as comfortably as possible - joggers, jumpers, and cosy socks are all welcome!
-
You can book classes and workshops through the timetable on our website, via the Mindbody app, or by email/phone. To book on our website you will need to create a quick free account with your name, email address and a password. The Mindbody app is available from the app store on your phone and you will also need an account set up in order to use this. If you have previously booked classes through our website, you can use the same login details on the app! Make sure you have verified your email address by clicking on the automated confirmation email.
If you have any difficulties booking online, please do get in touch.

We have lots of classes which cover a variety of different styles of yoga, including Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, Restorative, and Ashtanga. Some are slow, some flow, some have long strong holds, some use gongs and breathwork, in some you’ll sweat buckets and in some you won’t move at all! Have a read here for descriptions of all our classes.
Our yoga classes do not follow a set sequence (apart from our Ashtanga Inspired class, which moves through elements of the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series). The style of each class remains the same from day to day, so you know what to expect, but the content is developed by the individual teacher to portray their own unique style and you will therefore be doing something different every day. Each class is created and delivered with intention, dedication, and attention to detail.
-
The majority of our classes are suitable for all levels, and choosing your first class will depend on what you’re looking to get out of yoga, as well as your fitness level and any preexisting or new injuries/conditions. All of our teachers are used to having beginners in their classes; poses are talked through and verbal adjustments and modifications can be given. If injuries/health concerns are discussed prior to class, the teacher can also offer alternatives for you. Remember to take it easy, listen to your body, and take breaks when needed.
For your very first class we suggest trying one of the following:
Gentle Yoga / Movement for Everybody - these classes are suitable for everybody, including people who are brand new to yoga, anyone recovering from injuries, or those living with chronic illness. Take things at a slow pace and familiarise yourself with yoga poses and movements. A great way to get started in your yoga journey.
Strength & Grace - open to all levels and beginners welcome. Still fairly slow moving but with some stronger holds which require a basic level of fitness. Feel strong, stretched out, and connected to your breath and body.
Yin / Sound Asleep / Sound Healing & Relaxation / Simply Surrender / Sunday Stillness - based around pure relaxation, all of these classes are suitable for complete beginners and are mainly floor-based with minimal movement and guided meditations.
If you are pregnant, please read our pregnancy questions below and note that not all of our classes are suitable for you to attend.
You can find detailed descriptions of all our classes here.

Choosing the right class for you depends on what you’d like to get out of practicing yoga as well as your individual needs. Generally speaking, all yoga will help you to relax and destress and most movement classes will help you to build strength and flexibility. The majority of our classes are suitable for all levels but we do suggest checking the class description before booking to ensure that the class will be right for you.
You can find detailed descriptions of all our classes here.

Hot and warm yoga classes take place in a heated room - in hot yoga the room is around 38°C, and in warm yoga it is around 28°C. Hot yoga flushes out toxins in the body through perspiration, providing an instant body detoxification. With regular practice it synchronises the nervous and endocrine systems, which play a large role in hormonal and emotional balance. You will feel an overall cleansing and mood boosting response after your sessions.
Our heating and humidity system has been designed to ensure that the air you breathe is clean and never drying, which prevents the skin and throat from becoming dehydrated. The hot air flow is distributed evenly throughout the studio meaning you will feel hot and sweaty without there being an imbalance of heat in the room.
-
Most of our hot classes are suitable for all levels. For your very first heated class we generally suggest starting off with one of our warm classes or a Hot Flow & Let Go class to see how you find the experience of practicing in a hot room. Hot Flow & Let Go is a good way to ease into hot yoga as it involves around 40 minutes of movement and 20 minutes of slower stretching.
If you have an established yoga practice and/or are fairly physically fit, feel free to dive into Hot Strength & Grace or Hot Vinyasa Flow!
Tips for hot yoga:
Drink plenty of fluids during and after class, remembering to take small sips while you are practicing
Listen to your body and take breaks whenever you need
If you feel lightheaded, come down onto your mat for as long as you need, and alert the teacher if needed
Try to stay in the room if possible, as the sudden change in temperature can sometimes make you feel worse (however you are of course welcome to leave the room as needed)
Please note that hot/warm yoga is not suitable during pregnancy; have a read of our pregnancy questions below for further information.

If you are new to The Yoga Shed, we recommend arriving 15 minutes before your first class so that you have time to fill out a health form, have a quick tour around the studio, and chat through any questions before the class.
The front desk staff will let you know when the studio is ready to enter (due to quick class changeovers some classes will only allow admittance a few minutes before the session). Please be prepared that if you do arrive earlier than 15 minutes before your class you may be refused entrance until the studio is ready for you.
We ask that everyone arrive on time and try to be settled in the studio at least two minutes before the class begins.
-
If you enter the front door any later than 7 minutes after your class start time, you will not be able to join the class. We are unable to make any exceptions for this, both for health and safety reasons and also to cause minimal disruption to our other customers. Please bear this in mind when planning your journey.
-
Make sure to sign in at the front desk, and let us know of any new injuries/medical updates or changes to your address or card details. Your personal information is stored securely and kept confidential, and we adhere to GDPR regulations.
Please leave your shoes on the shelves by the door - no shoes should be worn in either of the studios or upstairs. We ask that you don’t take anything into the studio apart from your props/mat/water, so please leave all personal belongings outside in the changing rooms or on the shoe shelves/coathooks. Phones and smart devices should be set to silent and left outside the studio.
Feel free to help yourself to one of our mats, either from the hooks in the downstairs studio or from the box at the top of the stairs for the upstairs studio. If you borrow a mat for hot yoga, please use a towel over the top. There are stickers on the floors in both studios to guide your mat placement - please ensure that the sticker is in the centre of the top edge of your mat.
-
We currently have a limited number of lockers available. If you are not comfortable leaving your valuables in the changing rooms or corridor, please ask at the desk for a locker key or to leave your items safe with us.
-
Yes, we have changing rooms and showers upstairs which are open for use by all. We also have shower towels available to rent for £2.50, just ask at the front desk.
-
We are located very close to Hitchin rail station. Please take a look at our ‘Getting to us’ page for more information.
-
We do have some parking spots but places are very limited and we cannot guarantee there will be a space for you. Please have a read here for information on alternative parking options. Where possible we encourage you to walk, cycle or use public transport (and we offer stamps towards free drinks if you do so!).
-
We always recommend booking in advance! We do have set class sizes and can’t guarantee there will always be space available for walk-ins. If you are having difficulties booking online please feel free to drop us an email or give us a call/leave a voicemail.
Our Kids Yoga and Teen Yoga classes are an exception - you are very welcome to drop in to these classes and pay on arrival.
-
Please cancel your booking at least 4 hours before a studio class, at least 2 hours before an online or outdoor class, and at least 12 hours before a workshop/gong bath. You can cancel online, in person, or by phone/email.
When you cancel before this time, the pass will automatically go back onto your Yoga Shed account to use at another time. If you would prefer a refund for a drop-in purchase, please get in touch and we will arrange this for you.
If your cancellation is late, your pass will automatically be used as payment for your booking.
-
We accommodate and welcome everyone, as long as your doctor has advised that you are ok to take part in yoga classes. Please make sure you inform us of any injuries, physical and mental issues, or medication you are on when you first visit us and keep us up to date if anything changes. Don’t let any of these issues put you off coming, and do reach out if you would like some advice on the most suitable classes for your needs. Our teachers check through any medical notes before each class, but feel free to have a chat with them too to make them aware of any specific needs, so that they can offer you modifications throughout the class if needed.
-
Please do not attend any yoga classes during your first trimester. If you regularly practice with us, please let us know in confidence that you are pregnant straight away. Once you are past 12 weeks in your pregnancy and have your doctor’s approval, you are welcome to join any of the pregnancy-friendly classes below and can then continue to practice throughout your pregnancy. We will ask you to fill out a pregnancy health form at the desk and advise you to keep us updated of any changes.
Our pregnancy-friendly classes:
Prenatal Yoga - Wednesday 7:45pm and Saturday 10:30am
Movement for Everybody - Wednesday 11am
Sound Asleep - Wednesday 8:15pm
Sound Healing & Relaxation - Friday 11am
For your own safety we ask that you keep to these classes only during your pregnancy, as these teachers are specially trained in prenatal yoga and can offer specific modifications and adapt their class accordingly to make it safe and enjoyable for you. You can read more about these classes here.
We strongly advise you not to use the heated studio during pregnancy, no matter how experienced you may be in your practice. During pregnancy the body starts to create higher levels of a hormone called relaxin and the additional heat may cause the body to over stretch. You are also far more likely to become dehydrated in the heat and this should therefore be avoided.

There are endless benefits to practicing yoga during your pregnancy. Here are a few: improved general health and relief from and management of pregnancy related ailments e.g sciatica, constipation, backache, swollen feet and heartburn. Pregnancy yoga can increase energy levels, lower stress levels, aid better sleep, lessen muscle tension and strengthen your body and posture as your body shape changes to adapt to carrying your growing baby. You may also feel mental benefits: feeling more emotionally balanced, positive, confident and empowered. The class works towards a positive and active labour, and certain tools you learn may be beneficial at the time of labour. Finally, the class also creates a community for you and other mums, where you can ask for advice and exchange support. Some of you will make lifelong friends for yourself and your babies.
-
We have a dedicated postnatal yoga class every Tuesday at 11:15am, which you are very welcome to bring your baby along to until they are confidently crawling. Please ensure you are at least 6 weeks post-labour (if uncomplicated) before joining class and have had the all clear from the doctor/midwife. This is usually later than 6 weeks if you have had a caesarean birth. Do get in touch if you are unsure.
Feel free to bring blankets, toys, and anything else you or your baby may need.
We understand that it’s pretty hard trying to get anywhere on time when you have a baby, so we are not strict on start times for this class. You are welcome to come in at any point during the class, and will hopefully benefit from some yoga and welcoming chat with us and other mums.
-
We have age restrictions in place for safeguarding and health reasons. Under 16s are only able to attend our child/teen classes, while 16-18 year olds can attend unheated classes (i.e. not hot or warm yoga) when accompanied by an adult.
We run Kids Yoga for 4-8 year olds on Thursdays at 4pm, and ‘Teen’ Yoga for 12-17 year olds on Thursdays at 5pm. These classes don’t need to be booked in advance - just drop in! Please note that these classes do not run during school holidays; we recommend double-checking our timetable.
-
Our online classes are run through Zoom. Please book in to online classes at least 30 minutes before the start time so that we can send you the class link (if you book on after this time please give us a quick call so that we can forward on the link to you). You will need to have a free Zoom account set up and be signed in before clicking on the link.
Make sure that your audio is off as the class begins; feel free to keep your camera on throughout if you wish, as it helps the teachers to make any adjustments.
While you are practising online with us, please do keep us updated of any health or medical changes so we can ensure your teacher is aware and that your online profile is up to date. Our teachers’ instructions are to be interpreted with your own body in mind and adapted to your ability accordingly. The Yoga Shed is therefore not responsible for any accidents or injuries during your home practice.
